Kingston: The Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance announced the finalists for the 2008 CSTA PRESTIGE Awards today. Kingston’s CORK Sailing Events is one of three finalists for the Sport Event of The Year Award with a budget under $250,000.
The Sport Event of the Year Award recognizes the overall success of an outstanding sport event with a budget under $250,000 hosted in Canada in 2007. Last year, the events included a World Cup for two Olympic Sailing events, North American Championships for development classes, as well as participation events for a total of more than 1200 participants.
Tim Irwin, Chair of the CORK events said; “We are proud to be nominated as a finalist for the award. The annual CORK events draw participants from all over the World and offer competitions for a wide range of ages and abilities.
The Kingston community supports the event and I would like to emphasize the significant contributions made by our volunteers. Without their support and dedication we would not be able to host such a successful event. I would also like to thank KEDCO for their support and encouragement for this event nomination”.
The CORK events have been hosted annually since 1969 and include Olympic, International and National sailboat classes. It is an internationally acclaimed event and International Sailing Federation (ISAF) World Cup Ranking Event. The 18-day events include all ages, abilities and skill levels (children, youth, adult, senior, able and sailors with a disability, participation events and elite events), with 350 volunteers assisting.
