It was an impressive sight to see so many young sailors aged 15 and younger, out on Lake Ontario for the CORK Optimist Regatta.  From August 11-13th, 115 sailors raced in a variety of conditions.  There is no doubt that many of these sailors will be representing their countries in the Olympics, the America’s Cup or other major international competitions in years to come!




In the Green “beginner” competition, 15 novice athletes completed 13 races.  The top 5 finishers were:
  1. Connor McNeil (FBYC, ON)
  2. Luka Kremic (NYC, ON)
  3. James Morris (NYC, ON)
  4. Victoria Ord (EYC, ON)
  5. Oliver Tristan (SMSC (ON)
In the Championship fleet, 99 sailors worked very hard throughout the regatta over 8 races.  The top 3 sailors overall were:
  1. Scott Barbano (BBYC/LOST, USA)
  2. Max Simmons (NYC, USA)
  3. Malcolm Lamphere (LGYC, USA)
Top Canadian and winner of the Valerie Award was Gordon Bruce (Toronto/Loot Team) in 6th overall.

Podium Placements in the different age groups were as follows:

Red (13-15 years)

Blue (11-12 years)
  1. Malcolm Lamphere (LGYC, USA)
  2. Andy Widmeier (BBYC, USA)

White (10 and under)
  1. Berg Ellemers (KYC, ON, CAN)
  2. Matti Muru (EYC, ON, CAN)
  3. Owen McNeil (STYC, Virgin Islands)
