Safety Officer Course
A new Safety Officer Course was conducted at KYC and CORK on June 1st and 2nd, 2013. This was the first offering of a new, officially sanctioned Safety Officer Course, recognized and sponsored by Ontario Sailing. Co-sponsored by CORK and the Kingston Yacht Club, it was conducted in a varied mix of weather and wind.
The trainers, David Lewis of Toronto and Gary Howard of Belleville were assisted by Geoff Webster of Napanee. The course was designed by David and Gary over the past five years and benefited from the accumulated wisdom and experience of past Safety Chiefs at CORK and the Regatta Safety book written by Geoff and the late Paul Rushton.
The Saturday in class theory session saw Hugh McDowell of Ottawa receive his certificate and recognition for his involvement and ingenuity in a rescue two years ago.
Geoff Webster received the first ever Safety One Certificate in recognition of his vast experience and years of Safety work at CORK.
The Sunday on water session started with heavy fog and little wind but built in the typical Kingston pattern to a windy and wavy afternoon. Trainees were able to practice skills reviewed in class with real life scenarios on the water. Two race sailors from the Kingston Yacht Club were the guinea pigs for these training exercises so the hands on session was as realistic as possible.
Upon completion of the required apprenticeship at future regattas, participants will receive their Ontario Sailing approved certificates.
The trainers would like to thank Ontario Sailing, Kingston Yacht Club, CORK, Rob Frost (Kingston Yacht Club Training Center Coach) the participants (all seemed to have a devilish sense of humour) and Erika Vines (co-ordination between groups and KYC).
